Founder mode: how to stay in flow while your product gets built
You don't need to manage the dev team. Here's how to stay strategic while we handle execution.
The founder trap
We've seen it dozens of times. A founder hires a dev agency (or a freelancer, or a small team), and immediately falls into one of two failure modes:
Mode A: Micromanagement. They're in every Slack message, approving every PR, second-guessing every technical decision. The dev team slows down. Morale drops. The founder burns out from context-switching.
Mode B: Total abdication. They hand over a brief and don't check in for weeks. The team builds something technically correct but strategically wrong. Pivoting costs a month.
There's a better way.
The weekly rhythm that works
The founders who get the best outcomes from working with us follow a consistent rhythm:
Monday: A 15-minute async video (we use Loom) reviewing what we're shipping this week and what decisions we need from them. They respond async — usually a voice note or short video back.
Wednesday: A 30-minute call — not a status meeting, but a decision meeting. We bring the blockers and options. They decide.
Friday: We ship. They review in the staging environment and give a thumbs up or a list of tweaks.
That's it. 45 minutes of sync time per week.
What founders should focus on
While we handle build, the best founders are spending their time on:
Talking to users. Not reading our updates about talking to users — actually getting on calls themselves.
Refining the positioning. How are they explaining the product to early users? What's landing? What's confusing?
Preparing for launch. Building the waitlist, writing the launch post, lining up press.
Raising (if applicable). Not trying to manage technical sprints at the same time.
The handoff that sets everything up
The most important meeting isn't the kickoff. It's the requirements session. We spend 2–3 hours mapping every screen, every user flow, every edge case before writing a line of code. Founders who show up to this session having thought it through get 30% faster delivery — because we spend less time asking clarifying questions mid-sprint.
Founder mode isn't about being less involved. It's about being involved in the right things.
